In 1998 the French scientist Bernard Buigues, following rumors
among nomadic tribes in Siberia, found a buried frozen mammoth. The body is
believed to be intact. Now an international team of researchers are going to
dig it up. The mammoth has been frozen for something like 20.000 years and the
digging has been estimated to take about three months. American Discovery Channel
will be following the work, filming it for a TV documentary.
When the mammoth has been dug up it will be transported to an
ice cave in Chattanga in Siberia, where it will be kept frozen so as not to
damage the body tissue by defreezing. Once in place in the cave the researchers
will try to take genetic samples of the body to investigate the possibility's
to clone the mammoth.
